Recruiting teenagers through social networks, messengers and gaming platforms

20 November 2025, Thursday

Foreign intelligence agencies and extremist groups use proven psychological tactics. It is important to know these methods to recognize a threat early.

Methods of influence

1. Disguised as a "game" or "quest" – offering to perform "patriotic tasks": photographing military installations, distributing leaflets, participating in "protests."

How to recognize: Any requests for secrecy or a "special mission" should arouse suspicion.

2. The lure of "easy money" – promising a reward for "simple work": collecting data, administering chats, disseminating information.

How to respond: Emphasize that they are not asking you to break the law for real money.

3. Pressure on your desire to be important – using phrases like "Only you can help," "This is secret, but very important."

How to respond: Explain that truly important matters do not require hiding from loved ones.

4. Blackmail after initial contact – once engaged, threats begin: "We know what you did, now work for us."

How to respond: The teenager should know that in such a situation, it is necessary to immediately contact an adult.

Warning signs

1. Increased secrecy: deleting messages, passwords on new devices;

2. Uncharacteristic phrases in speech: "I was given an assignment," "it is a secret";

3. Photos of strategic facilities or strange contacts appearing in the gallery.

Practical measures

1. Discussions about digital hygiene: how to recognize manipulation, where to seek help;

2. Monitor behavior: sudden changes in mood, social circle;

3. A clear course of action: if there are any suspicions, talk to the teenager and inform the parents.

Important to know: Russian intelligence agencies and law enforcement agencies (Ministry of Internal Affairs, Investigative Committee) do NOT use teenagers for operational work and do NOT recruit via the internet.
