Automatic processing of postal items by index appeared in our country 50 years ago. Digital postal indexing is still relevant today, but it became much easier to find out the index and correctly arrange address lines.

The Russian Post is carrying out a large-scale digitization of its services. The online format of work significantly shortens the time and helps to independently track the whole way of parcels or letters. But the «digital era» for the federal postal operator started long before that. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the digital postal zone system - a six-digit postal code. The six-digit index, we use today, was introduced in 1971, when the first envelope with the index column arrived at the country's branches.

The introduction of the index system has significantly reduced the time taken to sort letters. The postal workers have a mechanized assistant - an electronic sorting machine. Responding to the challenges of the time, the Russian Post constantly introduces new services, convenient and accessible to clients.
